Do not Believe the Truth is the sixth studio album by the English rock band Oasis, released on May 30, 2005 through Big Brother Records. It reached number one on the UK Albums Chart with first week sales just under 238,000, and was the 32nd best-selling album ever in the UK. The album entered the US charts at number 12, with 65,000 copies sold in its first week, the highest Oasis album ever since 1997 Be Here Now , although the charts remain brief. Do not Believe the Truth earned triple platinum in the UK in the first week of 2006 (900,000 sales), and in the US has sold over 200,000 copies.

Each band member contributed to the songwriting for the album, and this album was the first in which all the tasks were shared between band members. On some tracks, ordinary bass player Andy Bell handles the guitar, while Gem Archer and Noel Gallagher donate bass to another song. Do not Believe the Truth is the first Oasis record to feature a drumming game from Zak Starkey who, though not an official Oasis member, performed and toured with them after the departure of longtime drummer Alan White. The album received positive reviews from critics and many mentioned it as Oasis' best album in a decade.

Liam Gallagher also has a greater impact on this album by developing his song. Noel said that this album is his favorite of the last four Oasis, as all the members have contributed to it. This, he claims, has given him a different nuance than a typical Noel Oasis album written.

The band embarked on a massive worldwide tour starting at Astoria London for their Do not Believe Truths tour, visiting 26 countries and playing for 3.2 million people in a total of 113 concerts. This resulted in the making of Lord Do not Slow Me Down, a film that was later released on DVD. To date the album has sold over 7 million copies worldwide.

Recording

The recording process for Do not Believe the Truth is extended. The album was supposed to be released around the summer/fall of 2004, with an initial 3-4 week session produced by Death in Vegas. The recording finally began after Alan White's departure in January 2004 at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall, though the group was dissatisfied with the results, as Noel said, "Unfortunately, after the recording process, we decided we did not like anything we played/recorded during three weeks, and due to a commitment to Death in Vegas, Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes can not find any more time to give to the project. "

Noel has commented because on many occasions that there is no problem with the work done by Death in Vegas, but he feels the songs they are doing are not good enough to make the recording, and feel the need to rest where new material should be written. In Noel's words: "We try to polish the dirt". Around ten songs were worked with Death in Vegas which, according to Noel, was six "not even good enough to make a b-side". Four of the songs that eventually appeared on the album were done with Death in Vegas, the songs were: "Turn Up the Sun", "Mucky Fingers", "A Bell Will Ring" and "The Meaning of Soul", though all this has extra work done to them or re-recorded before it is released.

After a short break where many new songs, including "Let There Be Love," "Lyla" and "Part of The Queue" were written, the band reunited in their Wheeler End Studios with Noel as a producer. The band was joined in this session by The Who drummer, Zak Starkey. In June 2004, Oasis launched two new songs from these sessions, written by Gems in "Liam" The Meaning of Soul and "A Bell Will Ring" in two live shows in Poole and at the Glastonbury Festival.

After hearing about the band's production problem from Oasis manager Marcus Russell, American producer Dave Sardy expressed interest in taking over production tasks. Sardy was given a recording of the recording sessions to mix, and after his work was praised by the band, he arrived in England to oversee a new recording session at Olympic Studios in London. This session did not last long before he asked the band to travel to Los Angeles and re-record most of the albums there, as he felt more comfortable working in the studio closer to home. With the band finally approving this, the recording sessions began at Capitol Studios in November 2004 with the band spending about nine weeks there.

Release

The decision to have a single lead-off, "Lyla", on the album is a controversial one, fueled by a labeling feeling that no lead leads match between the songs that were originally presented. As a result, the decision was taken to record "Lyla", a song written by Noel and demonstrated a year earlier, but which was not recorded by the band during the previous recording sessions. It was decided that Dave Sardy would re-mix Noel's original demo with Liam recording a set of lead vocals and Zak adding a new drum song. "Lyla" reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and number nineteen on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks US chart. After the initial booking of the first single choice taken from the band's hands, Noel, who originally wanted "Mucky Fingers" to become the first single, now reluctantly admits that the song is "doing business".

In April 2005, four songs from the leaked promo disc: "The Meaning of Soul", "Mucky Fingers", "Keep the Dream Alive", and "Let There Be Love". The full album found its way onto the Internet on May 3, 2005 instead of May 30, when Apple Inc. inadvertently put this album early for sale on their iTunes Music Store service in Germany. Although there is no official comment by Apple or by Oasis management, it's speculated that Apple only gets a confusing date.
