Plot

Bryan Ryan (Neil Patrick Harris), a former high-profile member of McKinley High, came as the auditor of the school board. He speaks to the club happily, asking everyone to write their biggest dreams on a piece of paper. He then takes Artie's paper (Kevin McHale) and throws it into the trash, making the point that their dreams will never come true. Having failed to realize his own dreams, he intends to trim the glee club. Glee's club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) assured him that it was not too late to pursue his dream and sing "Piano Man" with him. They both auditioned for Jean Valjean's role in local production of Les MisÃÆ' Â © rables, singing "Dream On" as a duet. Bryan decided not to cut the club happy, and even presented them with new costumes and sheet music, but changed his mind when cheerleader Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) announced that Will got the lead role. Will surrender his role in Les MisÃÆ' Â © rables to Bryan to rescue the glee club.

Rachel (Lea Michele) confesses in Jesse (Jonathan Groff) about his lifelong dream to discover his mother's identity. As they searched through the record box from his basement, Jesse took the tape from his jacket and pretended it was from the box. The tape was labeled as a message from mother to daughter. Rachel refused to listen to the tape, stating that she was not ready. Jesse then meets Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel), Vocal Adrenaline coach, who reveals that she is Rachel's biological mother, but a contract agreement with Rachel's two fathers prevented her from meeting Rachel until Rachel was 18 years old. Jesse reveals that although he has "befriended" Rachel just to get more acting practice, she actually started to like it. He begged Jesse to convince Rachel to listen to the tape. Back at Rachel's house, Jesse started the tape when Rachel entered her bedroom, then left her to listen. In the recording, Shelby sang "I Dreamed a Dream", which leads to a duet with Rachel in dream sequence, ending with Rachel back to her room in tears.

After Bryan's disappointing speech, Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) took Artie's paper from the trash and learned that her greatest dream was to become a dancer. Tina wants to dance with Artie, but she falls from her wand when she tries to stand up from her wheelchair. Tina entertains Artie by showing him some of the latest research in the care of spinal cord injury. While waiting for Tina to buy pretzels at the mall, Artie fantasized about being able to stand up from a wheelchair and dance to "The Safety Dance" in the flash mob car sequence. He then asked Emma Pillsbury counselor (Jayma Mays) for advice on how to deal with the possibility of running again in the light of new research, but was disappointed when Emma told him that such treatment might not be available for long. Tina continues to offer to dance with her but she refuses, insisting that she chooses another couple but agrees to sing during the dance. Tina chose Mike (Harry Shum, Jr.) as her dance partner when Artie leads the glee club into "Dream a Little Dream of Me".
