Lyrics and composition
The song was written by keyboardist Journey Jonathan Cain. He started writing songs with only the lyrics of "highway running into the midnight sun" on paper napkins while on a tour bus heading to Saratoga Springs, New York. The next day, he completed the full song in just half an hour. Cloth connects the song's rapid genesis with his Christian faith: "I have never had a song so soon coming to me... [...] anointed, supernatural." Neal Schon also commented on the beginning of the song: "[Kain] told me that he got the melody from the dream, I hope something like that will happen to me." Cain finished composing songs on the grand piano behind the scenes at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, where the band performed for the first time. According to liner notes in Journey's Time3 compilation Cain rewarded street manager Pat Morrow and stage manager Benny Collins when he wrote "we all need clowns to make us smile." He characterized the song as "road song", remarking, "You know I'm a good dog here - do not worry."
"Faithful" is written in key B major with a tempo of 65 beats per minute at the same time. The song follows chord progressions B - G ? m - E-B, and vocal range from G ? 4 to B 5 . This song describes the relationship of a "musical man" with his lover. Difficulty raising and nurturing family and staying faithful while touring was raised. However, he shows that he gets "the joy to rediscover" himself, and insists "I am forever yours... Faithful." Kain wrote this song about the difficulty of becoming a married man as well as a tour musician. As soon as the song was released, he and his wife divorced. Like "Rosanna" by Toto, "Faithful" contains the lyrics delivered by the lead singer but written by other members of the band, which led to many fans believing that Steve Perry wrote a song about a certain girl.

Music video
This music video features a unique "life on tour" theme at that moment that is parallel to the lyrics of the song, showing the band's performances in various places and their travels in the United States. Steve Perry can be seen shaving his short, but talkative mustache in the video. This video utilizes a recording of the documentary Journey: Frontiers and Beyond narrated by John Facenda, the voice of NFL Films, shortly before his death in 1984. The concept of "road video" was then used by several people. other bands & amp; artists, including Bon Jovi, Guns N 'Roses, Genesis, MÃÆ'¶tley CrÃÆ'¼e, Poison, and Richard Marx.
Legacy
Bryan Adams opened for Travel on their 1983 Frontiers Tour, and during that time wrote the song "Heaven", which was heavily influenced by "Faithful". The recording of "Heaven" features the drummer Journey Steve Smith.
After recording the song "Purple Rain", Prince called Cain and, worried it might be too similar to "Faithful", asking him to listen. Kain assured the Prince by telling him that the songs only share the same four chords.
