The Ghosts are shirts or other garments created by Ghost dancers and are considered to be given spiritual power.

Ghost T-shirts, sacred to certain Lakota factions, are considered wary of bullets through spiritual powers. Jack Wilson (known among Lakota as Wovoka) opposed rebellion against white settlers. Wovoka believes that through pacificism, Lakota and the rest of the Native Americans will be released from white oppression in the form of an earthquake. However, two Lakota warriors and Wovoka followers, Kicking Bear and Short Bull, think otherwise, and believe that Ghost shirts will protect the wearer enough to actively fight white oppression. The shirt did not work as promised, and when the US Army attacked, 153 Lakota died, with 50 wounded and 150 missing in the Wounded Massacre.

Anthropologist James Mooney argues that the most likely source of the belief that a ghost shirt can resist bullets is the Mormon temple clothing (which Mormons believe protects pious users from evil, though not bullets). Scholars believe that in 1890, the head of Kicking Bear introduced the concept to his people, Lakota.

In Kurt Vonnegut's novel, The Piano Players, a rebellious faction against a rigid, stiff and rigid United States called the Ghost Shirt Society in the future. The founders claim that, like the militant native Americans of the late nineteenth century, they "made one final struggle for old values".
