WONDER WOMAN

The Lasso of Truth is a fictional weapon owned by DC Comics superheroine Wonder Woman, Princess Diana of Themyscira. It is also known as Magic Lasso or Lasso of Hestia . It was invented by William Moulton Marston, the inventor of a lie detector, as an allegory for feminine charm, but later became more popular as a tool to extract truth from people.

The snarer forces whoever he captures to submit; forcing his prisoner to obey lasso users and telling the truth.

Origin and influence

William Moulton Marston created the Wonder Woman but he also worked, in the previous period, during and after World War I, on a temporary systolic blood pressure test as a psychology student at Harvard University where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1921. Blood pressure was one of several elements measured in a polygraph test united by John Augustus Larson in 1921 although it has been associated with fraud since at least 1895, when Italian criminologist Cesare Lombroso invented a device used by police to measure changes in pressure blood criminal suspect. Marston's wife Elizabeth Holloway Marston, a student at Radcliffe College, apparently played a key role in her research: "According to Marston's son, it was his mother Elizabeth, Marston's wife, who advised him that 'When he is angry or happy, his blood pressure seems to be rising'. Although Elizabeth was not listed as a collaborator of Marston in her original work, Lamb, Matte (1996), and others refer directly and indirectly to Elizabeth's work on her husband's deception research. He also appeared in pictures taken in his polygraph laboratory in 1920 (reproduced in Marston, 1938). "

But the lie detector had nothing to do with Marston's Magic Lasso. Wonder Woman's or Golden Lasso is a direct result of their research into emotion and more about submission than truth. So Marston created the Magic Lasso as an allegory for feminine charm and an effect that suits people. The idea behind feminine appeal is that surrendering to a pleasant (rather than a rough) controller is more fun and therefore makes it more likely that people will bow down.

In the wrong false notes the correlation between lasso and systolic blood pressure test, Geoffry Bunn states:

Publishing history

Pre-Crisis

Laso is formed from Aphrodite's corset, which makes it indestructible and its magical properties are given by Dewi herself. Power forces anyone who is bound in it to obey the command of whoever holds the other end. This effect can be used in larger groups of people, although this reduces efficiency. Besides unbreakable, lasso is also elastic without limit.

Diana coated it with Amazon's special chemicals that enabled her to change her civilian clothes into Wonder Woman outfits. Diana exhibits exceptional skill levels with lasso, performing such a twirling to create an air current (above it she can float) and spin to emit a certain frequency that disrupts the spell.

Post-Crisis

In post- Crisis George PÃÆ' Â © rez reboot lasso was forged by the god Hephaestus of the Golden Girdle of Gaea ever worn by Antiope, sister of Hippolyta. It was so powerful that even Hercules could not break it and given it to Diana after Hippolyta consulted the Goddess. Originally Magic Lasso was given to Wonder Woman when he returned to Paradise Island. Then William Moulton Marston later reversed the original story in Wonder Woman # 1 when it was shown that Wonder Woman got it just before he left the Island of Heaven.

Empowered by the fire of Hestia, the people in lasso hold him to say the absolute truth. In addition, simple physical contact with the lasso can be enough to have such an effect when Barbara Ann Minerva attempts to trick her from Diana, but is forced to acknowledge her intent when she holds the lasso. The length is also unlimited, and can be extended depending on the user's wishes. Fires are said to be even able to heal the insanity, as they did in the case of Ares, God of War, when he tried to incite World War III. He rejected his plan when lasso showed him that such a war would not only destroy all life on Earth as he wanted, but also every potential congregation he was seeking to get it. Lasso has tremendous strength and is almost unbreakable. One story even shows Wonder Woman using a lasso to withstand the explosion of two atomic bombs. Unable to stop the American bomb that would trigger the Russian apocalypse machine he wrapped a bomb in the lasso and let the bomb explode. He easily has creatures with extraordinary super powers such as Superman, Captain Marvel, who has the power of Hercules and the Power of Zeus, and Power Girl, as well as gods like Ares and Heracles. (In some Pre-Crisis stories, it was even able to tie up Wonder Woman himself on the occasion he was caught, sometimes by Gunther.) This indicates that Wonder Woman still has its power even if tied by lasso.

The only time that has ever been shown to rest is when the truth itself is challenged. For example, at JLA lasso broke out when he refused to trust the confession generated from Rama Khan from Jarhanpur. Elsewhere, when a monster who thinks backing Bizarro is caught in Trinity, he is horrified by the idea of truth. As the antithesis of logic and reason he was able to break the lasso. The fable criminals, the Queen of Fables, who have the power to bring fictional or non-authentic characters to life, and himself "fictitious," have the power over the lasso by bringing fictional characters to life and possessing his improperly destructive henchmen. It should be noted that Wonder Woman is actually hoping to win just by trapping him and letting his truth power destroy the fairytale villain.

The magic lasso has then been shown to produce a variety of effects. When fighting against the Decay entity, Wonder Woman uses a lasso connection to Gaia, the Greek Goddess of Earth, as a circuit between the earth and the monster, pumping the death entity with the life-giving energy that destroys the creature. Diana herself stated that the lasso connection to Gaea is also constantly updating its users with these energies. Wonder Woman has also used it to create protective fire rings around people to protect them from Circe bestiamorphs. Lasso energy is also proven capable of destroying creatures that are forcibly resurrected by Black Lantern Corps rings. As a goddess of truth, Diana also uses it to take Donna Troy's memories and bring her back to life. In the Pre-Crisis comic, lasso also has the power to effectively control those who are bound in it.

In a mini comic accompanied by the release of the Kenner Super Powers figure of Wonder Woman, the Amazing Amazon trapped the mind-controlled Superman with his lasso, preventing him from destroying the Washington Monument. Superman can not resist the power of lasso as Wonder Woman makes him unconscious. Then, Wonder Woman uses her lasso on Brainiac and commands the villain to release Superman from her mind control.

In post-crisis comics, the power of truth is written as innate to Wonder Woman himself, with lasso focusing only from that power. A storyline in JLA Morrison-era comic by Joe Kelly describes lasso as a basic manifestation of universal truth, and, once corrupted (as when Wonder Woman doubts the truth that it reveals to him because he dislikes him), disrupts the underlying truths of reality itself. With a broken lasso, reality is dictated by whatever one believes to be the case, beginning with an older belief and extending to the beliefs held by various individuals in the present. This caused the Earth to become the center of the universe for two weeks, the Earth became flat for several hours, the moon turned into cheese for a while, Kyle Rayner assuming the appearance of Hal Jordan (many people still see Hal as 'the' Green Lantern), and Batman fades out of existence because of its 'urban legend' status (meaning that people are not sure if he exists). This allegorical interpretation is often ignored in later narratives and by many fandom, since lasso has long since enforced because it is miraculously incapable of solving, and never stated before as the ultimate representation of truth. During his adventures with the superhero team of the Justice League, Diana ends up fighting with a villain named Amazo who is able to duplicate the lasso aspect for his own use.

During his current tenure as a writer for Wonder Woman, Gail Simone has further explored the nature of Lasso of Truth, describing it as a "deadly weapon, which not only binds you, and follows his mistress's command, the damn thing can look into your soul. "

Lasso is not to be confused with the lasso of the current Wonder Girl, Cassie Sandsmark. The lasso, given to him by Ares, has the power to shock the target with "Zeus's lightning if Cassandra ties its target and becomes angry with them." Donna Troy also uses a mystique called Lasso of Persuasion, which has the ability to persuade anyone within its limits to bid Donna if her determination is greater than them.

Similarly, Bizarra's character also has lasso magic, the difference being that his lasso forces a person to lie.

Though Wonder Woman's lasso became mystical, in Bruce Wayne: The Road Home, shows that Batman has revolutionized Amazo technology, which helps to duplicate the ability of the lasso artificially. During Endgame , when the Joker uses the poison to change the Justice League against Batman, Batman is able to paralyze Diana using a 'veil veil', essentially Lasso of Lies woven by Hephaestus after she creates the original Lasso by reversing the original weave. Allegedly made using wool from sheep used by Odysseus and his men to escape from blind cyclops, it took Batman two years to get in the supernatural black market, combining them into armor specially designed to stand up to the League of Justice, with veil curtain trapping Diana in an illusion where he has killed Batman.

In the story of Elseworlds Red Son , Wonder Woman was conquered and restrained in its own season by the incarnation of Soviet Batman terrorists. To free himself and save Superman from the lethal Lex Luthor red lights, Wonder Woman severed his "indestructible" wires. The shock of the incident reveals Diana's age, leaving her gray hair, weak, and speechless.

In the movie

DC Extended Universe

The lasso appeared in the movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, where Wonder Woman made his first live action movie performance appearance. It was used in the battle against Doomsday to bind the monster until Superman stabbed him with a kryptonite spear.

In addition, it appears in the Wonder Woman 2017 film, also called Lasso of Hestia . The film's portrayal of lasso gold is partly used as an Indiana Jones whip. Diana used it for many battles, but prior to this, it was also used to interrogate Steve Trevor, with Hippolyta noting that it was painful for anyone to even try and lay under the influence of Lasso.

In Justice League, Lasso mainly appears as a weapon, but is also used to invoke truth in a funny accident when Aquaman sits on it, causing him to acknowledge his true feelings for other members of the League before anyone is aware of why he is doing this.

On television

Wonder Woman (TV series)

Feature lasso in the 70's live-action series Wonder Woman . In the first season, lasso has the power to force those who are bound to tell the truth. Beginning with the second season, it also has the power to cause selective amnesia. The lasso seems to be able to expand and contract, as in comic books; instead of strap a few joints at his waist, it's much longer and stronger when used for lasso or thrown people. In the second season, in an updated costume, the lasso is even shorter and more like a cloth, and is only about twenty feet long unless used for people or objects. It is significantly longer and heavier when used.

In the animated series Super Friends, lasso has the ability to follow Wonder Woman's telepathic commands, physically moving on its own to complete tasks. This capability is never shown in comics, although it suggests that without a tiara, Wonder Woman can not fully exploit the lasso's capabilities. In Super Friends , Wonder Woman is usually shown using lasso as a tool for achieving strength, making it unclear how far Wonder Woman itself has great power or lasso itself performs. In addition, the strength of the truth amplifier is used in the episode of Super Friend Challenge "Sinbad and the Space Pirates". Superman found himself snared by lasso, but he managed to tie up the controlled Wonder Woman as well. In that situation, Superman forced him to admit whether he was an enemy or friend and the truth of his friendship with him being imposed from Wonder Woman broke his pirate power over him. This power is also used in The World's Greatest Super Friends episode of "Space Knights of Camelon".

On The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardian, in the episode "The Fear", Wonder Woman suggests using lasso to gain recognition from one of the Scarecrow victims, though Professor Jonathan Crane (running out of costumes) warns him not to be afraid trauma.

DC Animated Universe

In the Justice League animation series, lasso is only used as a very long, flexible, and unbreakable rope. In Justice League Unlimited, however, the Wonder Woman lasso is officially portrayed as capable of imposing the truth. This ability was finally released on the episode of "The Balance" by Wonder Woman's mother, Queen Hippolyta who revealed that Diana had stolen the uniform before being told of her complete abilities. After touching the stars on the tiara, various parts of the Wonder Woman costume began to shine for a while like tiaras, bracelets, belts and lasso. After this Diana discovered that lasso could force the truth. However, in the series, Diana only uses the power of truth from lasso once, to the Abnegazar devil to study the location of Felix Faust, an event that occurred in the same episode.
