Lyrics and music
AllMusic critic Matthew Greenwald described "Minutes to Minutes" as one of the songs that reflects the Doobie Brothers transformation into "light and soul-oriented clothing." The keyboard is more prominent in the song than in some previous hits The Doobie Brothers. Greenwald praised the lyrics "simple and literate" and noted the possible effects of Booker T. & amp; M.G. in music. In their book Inside Hit , writers Wayne Wadhams (The Fifth Estate), David Nathan, and Susan Lindsay described the tempo as "medium shuffle". AXS's contribution, Bill Craig, describes the song as a song that is played with feeling, mid-tempo, and piano that he compares with Motown songs. Most of the "Minutes after Minutes" is the key of C major, but the bridge in E minor and the last refrain is in the G major. New Rolling Stone Album Guide praised McDonald's "mastery of vocal suave" on the song. Spin ' Rich Stim describes the song sound as "phlegmatic".
"Minute by Minute" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Song of the Year, but lost to the previous single Doobie Brothers, "What a Fool Believes". Co-writer Michael McDonald was surprised by the song's success after a friend told him that the song "did not have it." Craig judged it as the 6th biggest Doobie Brothers song.
