Plot

Ginny Grainger (Steenburgen) is the mother of two children, Cal (Robbie Magwood) and Abbie (Elisabeth Harnois). Her husband, Jack (Gary Basaraba), has been out of work since June, and they have to move out of the company house on January 1st. Jack fixes the bike as a hobby in the basement and hopes to give one to his children's poor friends. , Molly Monaghan, for Christmas. Even though he wanted to open his own bike shop, it would spend all of their savings, which Ginny said was a stupid move. To make ends meet, he worked as a cashier at a grocery store.

One night, Abbie crossed the road to the mailbox to send a letter to Santa. After he sent it, Gideon (Harry Dean Stanton), an angel who had watched the Graingers, took it from the mailbox and returned it to him saying that his mother had to send it. He agreed, and when he crossed the street to return home, a barrel of the car on the road headed toward him. Gideon stopped the accident and allowed Abbie to cross the street without incident.

The next day, Graingers visits Jack's grandfather, Caleb. She gave the children a gift: Cal a Christmas book and Abbie snowballs from the North Pole. That night Gideon visited Abbie in his room only to find out that Ginny did not send Abbie's letter to Santa Claus. Gideon warned Abbie that some things will happen tomorrow and not to be afraid. Meanwhile, Ginny and Jack are in the kitchen talking about their finances. He reiterated his desire to open a bicycle shop, but he felt that he should find a new job, because the time to start profiting from the business would be too long. Frustrated, he's out of the house for a walk. He hits back to him to try to solve the problem. Anxiously, all the Christmas lights began to revolve around him, to show that the last Christmas spirit had dried from him.

The next day, Christmas Eve, Ginny gets a ride to work from a friend. While at a gas station he saw a man named Harry Dickens trying to sell some of his possessions to support himself and his son, with little success. He shrugs off the situation and continues the day. Meanwhile, Jack, along with the kids, went to the bank to get money from their savings for Christmas shopping. He tells them to wait in the car, but Abbie goes to visit Ginny at the grocery store across the street. Abbie tells Ginny that Jack is in the bank that caused her to storm to stop her, just to ask her boss, Herbie Conklin, to see him go and fire her. He returns Abbie to the car and enters the bank only to find that Harry is holding it. Jack tries to extinguish the situation, but Harry impulsively shoots, and Jack collapses to the ground. Ginny was crying with her dead husband on the ground. In a panic, Harry runs away from the bank and steals Jack's car with Cal and Abbie still inside. Ginny chases him in his car, but runs out of gas before he can catch up with him. He came to a bridge where the police had set up a road block and tried to veer around him, but slid down from the bridge, dropping to his death into the ice river below.

Confused, Ginny returns to the empty house and weeps in the bathroom. However, Caleb soon came home to inform him that the children had been found standing by the side of the road. Police believe that Harry dropped them before the accident, when in fact Gideon saved them from the river. When they returned home, Ginny told them that Jack had been killed by Harry and never returned home.

That night, Abbie escapes to a Christmas tree in town in hopes of finding Gideon to ask her to bring back his father. Gideon told him that he could not fix things like what had happened to his father and that the only person who could bring him back was Santa himself. Gideon took Abbie to the North Pole to meet him. He tells her that he can not fix what happened or he can not bring the spirit of Christmas back to Ginny, but Abbie can. He then took him through his factory (run by "ordinary people, good guys," not elves) and picked up an old letter Ginny wrote when she was a child. She tells him that it may hold the key to help her mother.

Gideon returns Abbie to his house and he gives his mother the letter. He read it and finally realized the true meaning of Christmas: to celebrate what you have and not what you want. He walked out into the mailbox and sent Abbie's letter. At that moment, all the Christmas lights in the neighborhood came back on fire, Jack reappeared, and Ginny hugged her in bewilderment as she had just returned from her short trip the night before.

The next day, Ginny revived the Christmas Eve events with a very different attitude. He asked his boss to allow him to take time off so he could spend time with the family. At the gas station he buys a camp stove from Harry who thanks him and wished he'd say "Merry Christmas." That night, he attended the tree lighting in the village square, happily joining the participants in singing the . Then he wrote a check to Jack for the bike shop and the family gave it to Molly. When he would fall asleep, he heard something downstairs and found Santa putting a gift under a tree. He then stopped and looked at her and said, "Merry Christmas, Ginny." She smiled and with tears in her eyes, finally said the words she could not speak for so long: "Merry Christmas!"
