ring galaxy is a galaxy with a circular appearance. Hoag's Object, discovered by Art Hoag in 1950, is an example of ring galaxy. The ring contains many relatively young blue stars, which are very bright. The central region contains relatively few luminous materials. Some astronomers believe that galaxy rings are formed when smaller galaxies pass through larger galactic centers. Since most galaxies consist of empty spaces, these "collisions" rarely produce real interstellar collisions. However, gravitational disturbance caused by such an event can cause a wave of star formation to move through a larger galaxy. Other astronomers think that rings form around some galaxies when external increments occur. Star formation will then occur in the material that increases due to shocks and increased material compression.
