The Incredulity of Saint Thomas is a subject painting of the same name by the Italian Baroque teacher Caravaggio, c. 1601-1602. It's placed in the Sanssouci Picture Gallery, now a museum, in Potsdam, Germany.

This shows the episode that gave rise to the term "Doubting Thomas" which, formally known as the Incredulity of Thomas, has often been represented in Christian art since at least the 5th century, and is used to make various theological points. According to St. John's Gospel, Thomas the Apostle lost one of Jesus' appearances to the Apostles after his resurrection, and said, "Unless I see the mark of the nail in his hand and put my finger where the nail is, and put my hand to his side, I would not believe it. "John 20:25, NIV"> John 20:25 A week later Jesus appeared and told Thomas to touch Him and stop doubting. Then Jesus said, "Because you have seen me, you have believe; blessed are those who have not yet seen and do not yet believe. " John 20:29

In the painting, Thomas's face shows a shock when Jesus holds his hand and leads him to the wound. The absence of halo emphasizes the corporeality of the risen Christ. His work in chiaroscuro.

This image may be related to Saint Matthew and Angel (1602) and Sacrifice Isaac (1603), all of which have the same model. It belonged to Vincenzo Giustiniani before entering the Prussian royal collection, surviving the complete Second World War.

The second version of "The Incredulity of Saint Thomas" has been rediscovered in Trieste, Italy in a private collection. This is published in the catalog of Maurizio Marini corpus "Caravaggio - Pictor praestantissimus" Newton & amp; Compton - 2005 at position Q50. This painting is stated "d'interesse artistico e storico" by "Ministero per i Beni e le AttivitÃÆ' Culturali Sopraintendenza Regionale del Fiuli - Venezia Giulia". Its authenticity has been proven by several experts including Maurizio Marini, Maria Ranacher and Sir Denis Mahon and confirmed by a court in Trieste.
