Plot

Walter Sparrow is an animal control officer married to Agatha; they have a son, Robin. At the bookstore, Agatha began to look at a book called The Number 23 written by Topsy Kretts. He then gave Walter the book as a birthday gift. Walter began reading the book, realizing the strange similarity between himself and the main character, a detective who called himself "Fingerling." Reflecting the detective, Walter became obsessed with 23 puzzles, the idea that all the incidents and events were directly connected to number 23, or to some number connected to 23. When he tried to warn Agatha about the number, she told him that she was crazy.

Walter's obsession led him to believe that the book had a secret insight into his own life. When he reads that Fingerling killed his girlfriend, Walter started dreaming about killing Agatha. Agatha referred her to her friend, Isaac French, who suggested that Walter find the author of the book if she wanted an answer. Walter's quest led him to discover the murder of Laura Tollins. Now trusting the book as a shrouded confession, Walter seeks his murderer.

The evidence found in the psychiatric hospital reveals Walter is actually Topsy Kretts, after writing the book as a way to free himself from the guilt he felt for Tollins's murder. He was never suspected of committing a crime, and a man named Kyle Flinch was convicted and jailed instead. Walter had dated Tollins 13 years earlier, but he left it for Flinch. Walter stabbed Tollins to death in a jealous rage and left the scene, moments before Flinch came and touched a knife, was involved in the murder. Burdened with guilt, Walter decided to commit suicide and began writing a suicide note, but found that he could not stop writing; the record ended up being a book. He survived his suicide attempt, but the resulting head injury left him suffering from amnesia.

Fearing he would hurt his family, he left home and moved to the same hotel where he tried to commit suicide. Agatha found Walter at the hotel and assured him that he was no longer the right person when he wrote the book. He insists that he is a murderer and tells Agatha to leave before he kills her as well. He leaves the hotel and runs into the street, where he almost let himself be hit by a bus. Walter stepped out of the way at the last minute when he realized his son was watching. Walter surrendered to the police and waited for punishment, having been told that the judge might be lenient to him. A funeral procession took place in front of Tollins's grave, where it was implied that his body was finally laid to rest, as Flinch observed, a free man.
