Plot

When his rich grandfather, Howard "Red" Stevens (James Garner), died, Jason (Drew Fuller) did not expect to inherit anything from his multibillion-dollar real estate. He hates his grandfather because his father has died while working for him. There is an inheritance, in fact, but it comes with a condition: Jason must complete 12 separate tasks within a year to get it. Each task is centered around a "gift". The prize of work, money, friends and study is one of the dozen that Jason has to do before he qualifies for the mysterious "Key Prize" his grandfather will have for him. Lawyer and friend Red, Mr. Hamilton (Bill Cobbs), and his secretary, Miss Hastings (Lee Meriwether), tried to guide Jason along the way his grandfather wanted to travel.

Upon his completion of the first task, everything he appreciated was suddenly taken from him - the luxury apartment, his restored muscle car, and all his money - and he became homeless. Her trendy girlfriend, Caitlin (Mircea Monroe), dumped her when her credit card was turned down at a fancy restaurant. After his mother (Donna Cherry) tells him that he can not help him, as part of the deal, he miserably wanders alone in the city. While sleeping in the park, he meets a woman, Alexia (Ali Hillis), and her vocal daughter, Emily (Abigail Breslin). Jason befriends the two, and then asks them to go to the attorney's office and confirm themselves as his "real friends" to get the job done, but after that Jason walks away and ignores Emily's request to see him again. However, Jason accidentally discovers that Emily is suffering from leukemia, and sees the opportunity to develop a strong bond with someone.

From that point on, he tries his best to help Emily have a great life while it endures, and Emily encourages romance between Jason and her mother. Another task required him to travel to Ecuador and study at the library his father and grandfather built to help the people there. This led him to overcome his hatred for his father's death there, and he traveled to the mountains with a local guide to see where it happened. Jason learned from his mentor that the story he always believed in his father's death was a lie, made by his grandfather out of guilt and shame for trying to push Jason's father into the oil business. Jason and the guides were arrested there and taken hostage by militants for several weeks, until Jason manages to ensure their escape. She returns to America and finds that Emily's condition has worsened, so she arranges for Gus's hand-ranch to hold a late Christmas celebration at her home for them.

After finishing twelve duties, Jason was given $ 100 million to do whatever he wanted, and all his properties were returned to him. His ex-boyfriend, knowing that he had regained his fortune, tried to win it back but he declined his offer. With her inheritance, Jason chose to build a hospital, called Emily's Home, for patients with deadly diseases, but before the building begins, Emily dies. After a breakthrough for Emily's Home, Jason is summoned back to the law firm for another meeting and says that he has exceeded the expectations of his deceased grandfather, and he was given the last $ 2-billion dollar prize, rewarding Jason not only for completing it. task, but to use $ 100-million to help others. That night, Jason was seen sitting on a bench in the park, when Alexia joined him. He thanked him for the help he and his daughter gave him. Then they kiss, as the butterflies, representing Emily, fly around them.
