Team England Three Lions 2015 - 2016 - 11th Hour Global Management
src: 11thhourglobal.com

" Three Lions " is a song released in 1996 as a single by the British band The Lightning Seeds to mark the participation of English football teams at this year's European Championships held in England. The music was written by Lightning Seeds' Ian Broudie, with comedian David Baddiel and Frank Skinner - presenter of the football-themed Fantasy Football League-themed comedy show at the time - providing the lyrics.

The title comes from the emblem of the English football team, which in turn comes from the British Coat of Arms. This song is one of only three songs to top the UK charts twice with different lyrics, the other being "Mambo No. 5" (in a version by Lou Bega and Bob the Builder) and "Do They Know It's Christmas?" (by Band Aid and Band Aid 30). It also regularly reappears on the UK singles chart around the major football tournaments involving the England team.

Themes

The lyrics, unlike most football songs, speak not about unlimited optimism for victory, but it tells how, since 1966 and the success of the English football team, every tournament ends in hopeless hopes. However, repeated failures do not diminish the feeling that Britain can return to that height ("Three lions in shirts/Jules Rimet still shine/Thirty years sick/never made me stop dreaming").

Introductory songs include examples of pessimism from football experts:

  • "I think that's bad news for English matches." (Alan Hansen)
  • "We're not creative enough; we're not positive enough." (Trevor Brooking)
  • "We will continue to get bad results." (Jimmy Hill)

In spite of past failures, every tournament was greeted with new hope that this might be the year they did again: "I know it, but again", and the chorus of the song states that "It's home, it's coming home, coming , football home "referring, such as tournament slogans," Football home ", to the discovery of modern games in England.

The song refers to English soccer heroes and famous moments of the past, in particular:

  • Bobby Moore - "The tackle by Moore" - the cool tack of Brazilian striker Jairzinho at the 1970 World Cup
  • Gary Lineker - "When Lineker scored" - his equalizer goal against West Germany in the 1990 World Cup semifinals
  • Bobby Charlton - "Bobby belting the ball" - his long-range goal against Mexico at the 1966 World Cup
  • Nobby Stiles - "And Nobby dancing" - his victory with a trophy in hand after the 1966 World Cup final

According to Frank Skinner's autobiography, the original lyrics sent to the FA included the line "Butchers ready to fight" instead of "Bobby belting the ball". The first was a reference to a famous World Cup qualifier against Sweden in 1989, in which defender Terry Butcher gave a normally committed performance, although his head was bleeding for most of the match. The FA requested this line be changed, to avoid suggestions from hooliganism imagery. The motive "ready for war" was then used in the 1998 version of the song (see below), linked to Paul Ince.

The final comment of the song contrasts with the opening of the song with a positive line indicating that England can win a major football championship:

  • "The English have done it in the last minute of extra time!" (John Motson's call of David Platt's last goal against Belgium at the 1990 World Cup)
  • "How safe! Gordon Banks!" (David Coleman)
  • "Good old England, England who can not play football."
  • "The British have it in the bag."

The sound of the crowd on the track intro is actually the BrÃÆ'¸ndby fans recorded by Ian Broudie at Anfield during the UEFA Cup match in October 1995.

On the CD The Beautiful Game - Official Album of Euro 96, there are two tracks that appear as Baddiel, Skinner and Broudie recordings that try to formulate what the song lyrics should be when in the original process of writing it. Track one is called "Three Lions Version One", where there are lyrics like "Three Lions in shirt/Just near where it says Umbro/Whites show dirt/The gray not as much so...". And "Three Lions Version Two", where they discuss the songwriting in a parody of Bruce Forsyth after when Baddiel suggested writing about a Beautiful Game, which Skinner recommend is Play Your Card Rights . Lyrics include (chorus) "Nothing for a pair/Dollies doing your transaction..." refers to the usual Forsyth slogan.

Success

The phenomenon of Britpop peaked in 1996, and Lightning Seeds is one of the main lights, so their involvement gives a huge appeal. It reached number one on the singles chart, and as England progressed to the semi-finals, stadiums across the country echoed with fan voices singing songs after England's victory over Scotland, the Netherlands and Spain. It's very popular, in fact, even other teams love it. England face Germany in the semi-finals, and JÃÆ'¼rgen Klinsmann said later that Germany sang the song itself on the way to the stadium, and the German team and audience sang the song as they paraded the trophy on Rö¶mer's balcony. in Frankfurt. The single even produced # 16 on the German singles chart. This song is still often heard on German radio stations.

The original version of the song still receives regular broadcasts in the UK at major soccer tournaments. It has been adopted as a singing chant and is sometimes sung by fans in England's international match today. When it was sung by England fans at the 2006 World Cup after England's lead against Paraguay, commentator John Motson commented, "When football songs go, the Three Lions are certainly the best". The song has sold 1.53 million copies in the UK in November 2012.

Three Lions went back into the charts at number 10 (as of June 13) during the 2010 World Cup. A total of five different versions were present in the top 100 at the time.

3 Lions '98

England lost on penalties against Germany in 1996, and the lyrics of the song rang again. It was subsequently re-recorded with different lyrics (under the title "3 Lions '98") as an unofficial song for the England World Cup campaign in 1998 and occupied the number one spot on the singles chart for the second time, beating the official English song " it feels) at the Top of the World? " by United United to the top spot with eight places.

This version of the song begins with the voices of the crowd from the 1996 tournament singing the original song's refrain section in the stadium. Where the song "Three Lions" 1996 drew many memorable moments from 30 years earlier, the 1998 version was reflected in the Euro 96 tournament and its entry with the previous disappointment, as well as the team's performance in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup. The verse that mentions this special player focus on the current England squad:

  • Paul Ince - "Ince is ready for battle" - the appearance of the Butcher against Italy in a crucial qualifier for the World Cup of the year
  • Paul Gascoigne - "Gazza is as good as ever" - the return of the eagerly anticipated 1990 World Cup form in Euro 96, especially his famous trick goal against Scotland
  • Alan Shearer - "Shearer will definitely score" - with five goals, he has been the top scorer of Euro 96, despite a poor performance in international matches before the tournament
  • Stuart Pearce - "And Psycho shouted" - his prime celebration after scoring a penalty in the Euro 96 quarter-final against Spain, lifting the burden he felt after failing to score in the semi-final shootings at the 1990 World Cup.

However, and in the midst of much controversy, both Gascoigne and Pearce were selected for the England World Cup 1998 squad, which was not announced until some time after the song was recorded.

As well as the karaoke version of the new song, the single features a song called "Tout est Possible" (French for "Anything is Possible") as the B-side. The song consists mostly of recurring choirs, samples from commentators and experts, and occasional short verses. It also begins with a sample of French speech that refers to "La Coupe du Monde" (World Cup).

videos of 1998

The video to the 1998 version of this song describes the match between a group of British fans (including Baddiel, Skinner and Lightning Seeds' singer Ian Broudie) and their German equivalent, most of whom have the name "KUNTZ" printed on the back of their football shirts (except for one, who actually owns "KLINSMANN"). This is a reference to German player Stefan Kuntz, who has played an instrumental role in Germany's semi-final victory over England at Wembley in 1996. Baddiel and Skinner taunted him on their Fantasy Football television program, using his name as a satire sexual; The segment is often cut by the broadcaster. The video also features a cameo appearance from Geoff Hurst, John Regis, Robbie Williams and Chris Evans.

The scene from the video when Frank Skinner dipped his arm into a pudding while holding a melon, so similar to the World Cup trophy, was shown on the German TV station ARD a few days before the final was played.

Three Lions 2010 by The Squad

Although Frank Skinner has dismissed possibilities in early 2010, Skinner, Baddiel and Broudie joined Robbie Williams and comedian/actor Russell Brand under the name "The Squad" for a new version of the song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, produced by Trevor Horn. The song adds vocals from ACM Gospel Choir, soprano (Olivia Safe) and commentator John Motson. It entered the UK singles chart at # 21. The song can be found in the UK The Album 2010 as the lead single.
