Biography

Initial years

Johnnie Taylor was born in Crawfordsville, Arkansas. He grew up in West Memphis, Arkansas, appearing in gospel groups as a young boy. As an adult, he had one release, "Somewhere to Lay My Head", on the label Chance Records in Chicago in the 1950s, as part of the QC Highway Gospel group, founded by a young Sam Cooke. Taylor's singing at that time was very close to Cooke, and he was hired to take Cooke's place in the last gospel group, Soul Stirrers, in 1957.

Several years later, after Cooke set up SAR Records, Taylor signed as one of the label's first acts and recorded "Rome Not Built In One Day" in 1962. However, SAR Records quickly became dead after Cooke's death in 1964.

In 1966, Taylor moved to Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was nicknamed "The Philosopher of Soul". He recorded with the band house label, which included Booker T. & amp; M.G. Her hits include "I Had a Dream", "I Got To Love Somebody's Baby" (both written by the team Isaac Hayes and David Porter) and especially "Who's Making Love", which reached No. 1. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and no. 1 on the R & amp chart B in 1968. "Who's Making Love" sold over a million copies, and was awarded the gold disk. In 1970, Taylor married Gerlean Rocket and they remained married until his death in 2000.

During his tenure at Stax, he became an R & D star; B, with more than a dozen success charts, such as "Jody's Got Your Girl and Gone", which reached No. 1. 23 on the Hot 100 chart, "Cheaper to Keep Her" (Mack Rice) and record producer Don Davis wrote "I Believe in You (You Believe in Me)", which reached No. 1. 11 on the Hot 100 chart. "I Believe in You (You Believe in Me)" also sold over a million copies, and was awarded the gold disc status by R.I.A.A. in October 1973. Taylor, along with Isaac Hayes and The Staple Singers, is one of the label's flagship artists, who is credited for keeping the company afloat in the late 1960s and early 1970s after the death of its greatest star, Otis Redding, in a flight accident. He appeared in the documentary Wattstax, released in 1973.

Columbia Record

After Stax folded in 1975, Taylor turned to Columbia Records, where he recorded his greatest success with Don Davis still in charge of the production, "Disco Lady", in 1976. He spent four weeks at number one on Billboard Hot 100 and six weeks at the top of the R & amp; B. It peaked at No. 25 on the UK Singles Chart in May 1976. "Disco Lady" was the first certified single platinum (two million copies sold) by the RIAA. Taylor recorded several more successful albums and R & amp; B hit singles with Davis at Columbia, before Brad Shapiro took over production duties, but sales generally fell considerably.

Malaco Records

After a brief stay at a small independent label in Los Angeles, Beverly Glen Records, Taylor signed a contract with Malaco Records after company founder Tommy Couch and production partner Wolf Stephenson heard him singing at the blues fun of singer Z. Z. Hill in the spring of 1984.

Supported by members of Rhythm Muscle Shoals Section, as well as home veterans such as former keyboardist Stax Carson Whitsett and guitarist/band leader Bernard Jenkins, Malaco gave Taylor the kind of recording of freedom given by Stax in the late 1960s and early 1970s, allowing him to record ten albums for labels in 16 years of work.

In 1996, Taylor's eighth album for Malaco, Good Love! , reaching number one on the Top Blues Albums (No. 15 R & amp; B) Billboard chart, and is the largest record in Malaco history. With this success, Malaco recorded Taylor's live video at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas, Texas, in the summer of 1997. The club section of the Good Love video was recorded at 1001 Nightclub in Jackson, Mississippi.

Taylor's last song was "Soul Heaven," where she dreamed of being in a concert featuring an African-American music icon that had died from Louis Armstrong to Otis Redding until Z.Z. Hill to The Notorious B.I.G., among others.
