Hunter Doherty " Patch " Adams (born May 28, 1945) is an American physician, comedian, social activist, clown, and author. He founded Gesundheit! Institute in 1971. Each year he organizes a group of volunteers from around the world to travel to various countries where they dress as clowns in an attempt to bring humor to orphans, patients, and others.
Adams is currently based in Urbana, Illinois. In collaboration with the institute, he promotes alternative health care models that are not funded by insurance policies.

Adams was born in Washington, D.C., son of Anna Campbell Stewart (nÃÆ' à © e Hunter) and Robert Loughridge Adams. Her maternal grandfather, Thomas Lomax Hunter, is a Recipient of the Virginia Award. His father, an officer in the United States Army, had fought in Korea, and died when stationed in Germany when Adams was a teenager. After the death of his father, Adams returned to the United States with his mother and brother. Adams has stated that after returning he suffered an institutional injustice that made him a disturbing target at school. As a result, Adams is unhappy and becomes actively suicidal. After being hospitalized three times a year for wanting to end his life, he decides "You do not kill yourself, you fool; you make a revolution."
Initial career
After graduating in 1963 from Wakefield High School, Adams completed a pre-training course at George Washington University. He started a medical school without a bachelor's degree, and earned his Doctor of Medicine degree at Virginia Commonwealth University (Medical College of Virginia) in 1971. In the late 1960s one of his closest friends (a man, not a woman as depicted in Patch Adams movies) were killed. Convinced of the strong connection between environment and health, he believes an individual's health can not be separated from the health of family, community, and the world. While working in a youth clinic at MCV, in the final year of medical school, he met Linda Edquist, a volunteer VCU student at the clinic.
Adams and Edquist married in 1975 and had two sons, Atom Zagnut "Zag" Adams and Lars Zig Edquist Adams; they divorced in 1998.

Gesundheit! Institute
Immediately after graduation, Patch, Linda, and friends set up Gesundheit! The Institute (originally known as many as Zanies), ran as a free community hospital from 1971 to 1984.
Updated Gesundheit! The Institute, which is considered a full-scale free hospital and eco-health care community, is planned for an area of ââ316 acres (128 acres) in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. The goal is to integrate traditional hospitals with alternative medicine, with organizations developing educational programs in the design of sustainable systems targeted to medical students and the general public.
Since the 1990s Adams has supported the Ithaca Health Alliance (IHA), founded as Ithaca Health Fund (IHF) by Paul Glover. In January 2006 IHA launched Ithaca Free Clinic, bringing a key aspect of Adams vision. Adams has also given a strong compliment to Health Democracy, the book Glover written and published in the same year.
In October 2007, Adams and the Gesundheit Board launched a campaign to raise $ 1 million to build a Center for Teaching and Clinics on the ground in West Virginia. The Center and Clinic will allow Gesundheit to see patients and teach health care designs.
Adams urges medical students to develop loving connections with their patients. The prescription for this kind of treatment depends on humor and games, which he considers important for his physical and emotional health. In the end, Adams wants Gesundheit! Institute to open a 40-bed hospital in rural West Virginia that offers free, holistic treatment to anyone who wants it.

In 2008, Adams agreed to become the honorary chairman of the "International Association for the Advancement of Creative Adjustment" or IAACM. In a number of speeches and essays, Martin Luther King, Jr., has called for such an IAACM, but nothing has ever been made. MindFreedom International, the non-profit coalition of Gesundheit! including as a sponsor group, launched IAACM to support "inability to adapt" and social change.
Adams is still leading the way to entertain children around the world. He also taught at a session of the Gravity Corrugated Circus camp Camp Winnarainbow .
In media
The 1998 film Patch Adams is based on Adams's life and views on drugs. Adams has been widely criticized for the film, saying he avoids the accurate representation of his beliefs in favor of commercial viability. He says that from all aspects of life and activism, the film describes it as just a funny doctor. Patch Adams also said about Robin Williams in an interview, "He earned $ 21 million for four months pretending to be me, in a very simple version, and not giving $ 10 to my free hospital." Patch Adams, the man, will have, if I have Robin money, give all $ 21 million to a free hospital in a country where 80 million can not be treated. "
However, in another interview, Adams explained that he disliked Williams, stating "I think Robin himself is compassionate, generous and funny.I like to think that it is who I am, and so I think he is the only actor I want to play me, and I think he's doing a great job. "Williams has also been actively supporting the Children's Research Hospital of St. Louis. Jude for several years.
After hearing about the death of Robin Williams, he released this statement.
The terrible news about the death of Robin Williams reached me here in the Peruvian Amazon on Monday night with tremendous sadness. Surrounded by over 100 friends and clowns in our annual journey, we grieve for this tragic loss and continue to appreciate the comic genius. Robin Williams is a wonderful, kind, generous man. One important thing I remember about his personality is that he is simple - he never acts as if he is strong or famous. Instead, he is always gentle and friendly, willing to help others with a smile or a joke. Robin is a brilliant comedian - no doubt. He is a loving and caring man. While watching him work on set for my life - Patch Adams - I see that whenever there is a tense moment, Robin will take advantage of his improvisational style to lighten the mood of the players and crew. Also, I would like to point out, Robin would be very kind to my kids when they would visit the filming location. Contrary to how many people see him, he actually seems to me to be an introvert. When he invites me and his family to his home, he values ââpeace and quiet, the opportunity to breathe - the chance to escape the fame his talents bring. While early in life, he turned to drug and alcohol use to escape, he replaced addiction with moments of solitude to help cope with the stress brought about by fame. The world is not good to people who become famous, and the fame that he collects is a nightmare. While sad, we are left with the consequences of his death. I am very grateful for her outstanding performance from my early life, which has enabled the Gesundheit Institute to continue and expand our work. We send our blessings to his family and friends in this moment of sadness. Thank you for all that you have given to this world Robin, thank you my friend.
Bollywood Film 2003 Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. Was inspired by the movie 'Patch Adams' based on Hunter Doherty's life and his unconventional methods of caring for patients. The film takes its method to the forefront in India and Pakistan where conventional methods are more dominant.
As a speaker, Adams traveled the world lecturing on his method of treatment.
