Ringkasan plot
A boy, who began to doubt Santa's existence, was awakened at night by the sound of a train. To his amazement, he found the train waiting for him. He saw a conductor who then looked into the window. He runs down and goes out. The conductor explained the train was called Polar Express, and was traveling to the North Pole. The boy then boarded the train, which was filled with many other children in their pajamas. As the train reaches the North Pole, the boys and the other children see thousands of Christmas elves gathering in the city center waiting to send Santa on his way. The boy was chosen by Santa to receive the first Christmas present. Realizing that he could choose anything in the world, the boy asked for a bell from one of the reindeer's reins. The boy put the bell in the pocket of his robes and all the children watched as Santa went to the night for his annual delivery.
Then, on the train home, the boy discovers that the bell has fallen through a hole in his pocket. The boy arrives home and goes to his bedroom as the train pulls away. On Christmas morning, his sister found a small package for the boy under the tree, behind all the other gifts. The boy opened the box and found that it was a bell, delivered by Santa Claus who found him in his sleigh chair. When the boy rang the bell, he and his sister admired the beautiful voice. Her parents, however, could not hear the bell and commented that it should be broken. This book ends with the following line:
At one time, most of my friends could hear the bells, but after so many years passed, it was silent for all of them. Even Sarah found a Christmas she could no longer hear her sweet voice. Even though I am old, the bell still rings for me, as it does for all who truly believe.

Development
Van Allsburg based the story on a mental picture of a child wandering in the woods on a foggy night and wondering where the car was headed.
At the film premiere, Van Allsburg stated that Pere Marquette 1225, formerly owned by Michigan State University and now owned by the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, Michigan, is the inspiration for the storyline. He plays on the machine as a child while on display and inspired by the number 1225, which for him is 12/25 - Christmas Day. 1225 which is actually used to create animated images from the engine and all locomotive sounds recorded from 1225. The only exception to this is the whistle, recorded from Sierra Railway no. 3.
