Baptism has no central governing authority, and Baptist belief is not entirely consistent from one Baptist church to another. However, Baptists have a common belief in almost all Baptist churches. This includes beliefs about one God, virgin birth, incompatibility, miracles, redemption in place of the death, burial, and resurrection of the body of Christ, the need for salvation (though the understanding of the means to achieve it may vary by time), divine grace, Church, the last thing (Jesus Christ will return personally and be seen in glory to the earth, the dead will be resurrected, and Christ will judge everyone in truth), evangelism and mission.

Practice

The Baptists practice the baptism of believers and the Lord's Supper as a two-fold act of faith obedience to the example and commandment given by Christ to Christians (Matthew 28:19, 1 Corinthians 11: 23-26). Most Baptists call it "ordinance" (meaning "obedience to the command that Christ has given us") rather than "sacrament" (an activity God uses to provide salvation or means of grace to the participant). Hence, historical Baptist theology assumes that there is no grace of salvation delivered by the ordinances and that original sin is not immersed in baptism. Baptists traditionally believe they are symbols.

Some Primitive Baptists and Baptists Separate in Christ also practice washing the feet as a rule.
