Plot

In 1984 Salford, Georgie Gallagher lived with his widowed mother Erica (Natascha McElhone). His passion for football was challenged by Erica's desire to ask Georgie to attend the prestigious Lancashire Grammar School For Boys and play rugby, run by the strict and academic Dr Farquar (Toby Stephens). Georgie is ready to get a scholarship at a prestigious school pending her passing entrance exam.

While attending an open day at school, Georgie spotted leaflets for the regional Manchester United Football Cup tournament. Determined to enter and defeat the school bully, Georgie grabs a wallet from a stranger in hopes of getting an entrance fee of £ 20. The stranger is Sir Matt Busby (Brian Cox), and after tracking him along with the help of his friend Bob (Philip Jackson) the couple learned that Georgie is an extraordinarily talented footballer. Matt and Georgie reached an agreement in which Matt would train Georgie's football team in exchange for silence for his theft.

Still needing money to get into a soccer tournament, Georgie tried to get into Dr Farquar's house to steal back the tuition that Erica was paying to make sure she passed Georgie's entrance exam to grammar school. He was arrested and arrested, and banned from playing football as punishment.

The team found an article in the newspaper about Sir Matt Busby and realized that their coach was the famous manager of Manchester United's legendary team. Feeling betrayed by his team and Sir Matt Busby for not revealing his original identity before, Georgie quit the team and refused to play in the final. Georgie was deeply hurt, feeling that all adults no doubt ended up lying to her.

On 75th birthday Sir Matt Busby, the team prepares to play in the final, while Georgie takes the exam in hopes of graduating and receiving a scholarship. Georgie urges Erica to attend the final to entertain the team. Without their leaders, the team is down with 2 goals. In a moment of greatness, Dr. Farquar interrupted the match with his favorite brass band, while Erica rushed to make Georgie play the second half of the match. Georgie confessed to her mother and said she wanted to win a trophy in honor of her late father. In the final moments of the match, Georgie scores with a direct free kick to win the cup.
