Every Open Eye is the second studio album by Scottish synth-pop band Chvrches, released on September 25, 2015 by Virgin EMI Records and Goodbye Records. Produced on their own, it was a band's follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut album, The Bones of What You Believe (2013). The album title comes from the lyrics in the song "Clearest Blue". The album received positive reviews from music critics and was listed on some of the best listings of the year end.

Recording and production

Chvrches started working on their second album in January 2015, six weeks after returning from the tour to promote their previous album The Bones of What You Believe . Like The Bones of What You Believe, a recording took place in Alucard Studios, located in an underground flats owned by Cook, updated with a down payment for the new album. The group was able to earn enough money from the sale of their debut studio album, which entered the top 10 of the UK Album Chart as well as peaking at number 12 on US Billboard 200 to be able to record in a better studio for their next album. However, according to Iain Cook, the group had a "kind [...] take [Alucard]" when the first LP record ended, despite the fact that they were still renting the place at the time, and decided to stay in the studio to produce Any Open eyes : "we want to get back to where it all started." Some, I think, are superstitious There's something in the room we do not want to get rid of, and we'd rather invest the money we have to improve equipment and patch everything - just make it exactly the way we want it, rather than give it to some other studio and other producers in LA or wherever. "Doherty says that the low rents from the venue gave the members less worry about the risk of wasting production costs, much freedom for experiments that he felt needed in making electronic music. The Neumann KH120A monitor used in this room is also used for recording Bones albums, which they praise as "easy to get along with, but at the same time quite representing what is happening".

There are changes in the tools and production equipment in making Every Eye Open . Chvrches now uses Steinberg's Cubase as their digital audio workstation instead of the company Nuendo, the latter having many features that the group does not need to use. Instead of using the old drum machine sound from the library and set the time with MIDI, the rhythm loop executed from the analog drum machine Dave Smith Instrument Tempest and Roland TR-8 drum machine is the record used to create the drum part rather than the samples from the library shown in < i> Bones . Doherty said, "We did not perfectly form every sound - snare drums cut off in strange places, filling the deliberately cut samples, but more importantly, I wanted to see, 'Here's my verse, this is my chorus.' which is much more musical to write drums if you can see what's going on and refer to the rest of the song at the same time.So we've defended the philosophy as a whole. "Besides the basement, Every Eyes Open made in Alucard's second room, where engineer David Simpson recorded Mayberry's vocals, featuring prefabricated vocal chambers that the group purchased from the internet for the room and were happy with, while Doherty would be in the basement working on instrumental. Simpson agrees to let the group use her room if they let her work on the note. Doherty described him as "the great man, the ultimate talent." He is the only person we trust to enter and take over some technical aspects of what we do. " Another difference is the subwoofer that the band uses; to match the Neumann monitor, the group uses the Neumann subwoofer, not the Tannoy subwoofer.

All three will write rough instrumental, Mayberry will write the lyrics and they will then collect the demo song. The band wrote about thirty demos. Producing all the music itself, they recorded 21 songs in total. The recording process takes about five months, with the band working six hours a day, five days a week. The band was approached about the prospect of a co-writing song for the album, but was rejected; Doherty explains: "When we made this album, a group of people offered to write with us, but we wanted to be an actual band." Cook noted that they wanted the album to "sound and feel spontaneous". "Clearest Blue", the seventeenth song recorded for the album, "came to determine how the rest sounded", according to Doherty: "big and happy and sad and banger". This group democratically determines which songs to include in the album, and disagrees with the "Afterglow" inclusion. On the last day of the recording, they slow down, deleted drum tracks and re-recorded vocal tracks. Vocals are recorded in one shot, with various background sounds remaining. Watching Mayberry's performance, Doherty was "very emotional", and they made the decision that the song would close the album.
