The Lion and the Witch is a live EP by American rock band, Weezer. Recorded in Japan in the Spring of 2002 while promoting Maladroit , was released on September 24, 2002, exactly six years after the Pinkerton release. It was distributed as a limited-edition release in independently owned music store with only 25,000 copies made. The album was then relaunched and rejuvenated in Vinyl in 2015, with only 3,000 copies.
Like Maladroit this EP marketing caused a rift with the Weezer record label Geffen Records. The band wanted an EP of eight songs with unique packaging that would not involve a crystal case. Geffen told the band that the idea of ââpackaging is too expensive and the number of songs in the EP needs to be reduced from eight songs to six to not disappoint other retailers who will not receive the disk. Artwork and packaging were jammed but the length of the disc was reduced to six songs including "hidden paths." This hidden song is an instrumental song titled "Polynesia" that opens discs.

Recording
When recording the EP, the band made two errors on this live disk. The Cuomo River accidentally began singing the third stanza "El Scorcho" during the second stanza and Scott Shriner, who had been in the band for less than a year at the show, forgot the words on the bridge for "Holiday," causing the band members another rampage. After the show was over, Cuomo mused "Scott just won the Grammy!" In addition to the error, the last song was thirty seconds shorter than the band desired and there was a truncated cut on the finished disc. None of the music is missing, but there are more after-song comments that the band wants on disk. The full version of this song was released soon afterwards on the band's website in mp3 format.

Artwork
The cover art was designed by the Los Angeles-based kozyndan duo. The liner notes from this album have a number of fan letters from Weezer Japanese fans in broken English. The note also lists production credits for Rupert Peasley, known among fans as the man on the couch on the cover of Maladroit, and E.O. Smith, who is a pseudonym for Rivers Cuomo, who went to E.O. Smith High School. Only 25,000 copies were individually numbered from the discs that some fans apparently had copies of disks with more than 25,000. As noted on the band's website, the numbering was interrupted by the difficulty of printing with cardboard sleeves.
