Rachel Dawes: ISFP â€
src: mtbifiction.files.wordpress.com

Rachel Dawes is the first fictional character to appear in the 2005 feature film Christopher Nolan Batman Begins . She is depicted in the film by Katie Holmes, with Emma Lockhart as a younger version of the character in the initial scene. Holmes also voiced characters in video game adaptations. Maggie Gyllenhaal replaces Holmes in the 2008 sequel The Dark Knight after Holmes chose not to repeat his role. Gyllenhaal also appeared as Dawes on the viral marketing website I Believe in Harvey Dent, giving Harvey Dent his support in the District Attorney's election.

In the Dark Knight Trilogy, Rachel is Bruce Wayne's childhood lover and one of the few people who really know her. The conflict between Bruce's love for him and his secret life as Batman was one of the main themes of the first two films in the trilogy, while his death in The Dark Knight partly motivated his action in the third and last movie, The Dark Knight Rises .

Fictional biography

Batman Begins

Rachel is Bruce Wayne's closest little friend. Rachel's mother works as a housekeeper at Wayne Manor, and the two often play together on the field. After Bruce's parents were killed by Joe Chill (Richard Brake), Rachel's mother looked for another job and left Wayne Manor with Rachel.

Rachel enrolled in law school and gained an internship at the Gotham City District Attorney's office during her first year. After Chill was killed to testify against Mafia boss Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson), Bruce revealed to Rachel that she intended to kill Chilli herself, and was angry that she lost her revenge. Rachel was horrified and told Bruce that her late parents would be ashamed of her. He also brings Bruce to the slums and shows him that Falcone's criminal kingdom has exacerbated the poverty created by Gotham City's economic depression, and states that every day more people like Chill turn into crimes out of desperation. Soon after, Bruce left the United States and Rachel continued her studies at law school. Years later, he became Assistant to the District Attorney.

Rachel dedicates her life and career to eliminating evil in Gotham, in the process of making Falcone's enemy and then Dr. Jonathan Crane (Cillian Murphy), chief psychic head of Arkham Asylum. When Bruce returns to Gotham, Rachel is surprised that she has not contacted him, and then feels disappointed at him, taking his façade playboy at face value. He reminds Bruce, "Bruce, deep down you may still be a big boy like you once, but not who you are under it, that's what you do that defines you." Around the same time, a costumed warrior who calls himself Batman appears in Gotham, and rescues Rachel from the Falcone killers. Rachel is attracted by masked crime fighters, unaware that she is her old friend, Bruce.

After his boss was killed by a criminal working for Crane, Rachel took over his job until his successor was found. Shortly after, Falcone had a psychotic break in police custody, and Rachel believed she was pretending to avoid the court, not realizing that Crane had drugged her with her fearful poisons. When he goes to Arkham to evaluate the situation, Crane gives him a drug with a frightened poison as well. Batman rescues her again, manages her antidote and tells her that Crane is working with the League of Shadows, a terrorist organization headed by Ra's al Ghul (Liam Neeson). He gave instructions for the plan to save the city from League attacks. He then drugged him and asked his butler, Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine), took him home. She wakes up in her bed and gives a sample of anti-poisons to Gotham City Police Sgt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman).

The League started a riot at the Narrows, one of the slums of Gotham City, and Rachel was trapped. Crane, who is now assumed to be the criminal alter ego "The Scarecrow", attacked him again. He defends himself and a boy who is caught in a riot by firing on Taser on Crane's face, driving him away. Soon, the city is ruled by inmates Arkham, whose League has been released, and Rachel and the boys are surrounded by madmen led by Falcone's henchman, Victor Zsasz (Tim Booth). Batman rescues them at the last minute and gives Rachel a hint about her secret identity.

Toward the end of the film, Rachel visits the remains of Wayne Manor, finding Bruce and Alfred sorting through the wreckage. He and Bruce share a kiss, but he tells her that they can not be together until Gotham no longer needs Batman. At the end of the film novelization, he was named Interim District Lawyer.

The Dark Knight

At the start of the second film, Rachel is in a relationship with Harvey's newly elected District Attorney (Aaron Eckhart), creating a conflict between himself, himself, and Bruce Wayne. Dent immediately asks Rachel to marry him, but she has no clear answer, split between her love for both men.

At one point, Joker (Heath Ledger) attacked Rachel at a Dent fundraiser, holding it in knifepoint. Batman arrives and fights against the men, but the Joker grabs Rachel and throws it from the windows of skyscrapers. Batman jumped out the window after him, falling into the car below.

Rachel is next seen at the funeral of police commissioner Gillian Loeb (Colin MacFarlane), who was killed by the Joker. At the funeral, the Joker attempts to kill Major Anthony Garcia (Nestor Carbonell), and leaves evidence showing that Rachel will be next. Rachel took refuge in Bruce's penthouse at Dent's insistence. There he and Bruce briefly relive their love story. He admits that he wants to surrender himself as Batman and wish they could finally be together, which Rachel says can not happen if she goes to jail. Dent held a press conference and claimed to be Batman. Rachel was disgusted that Bruce would let Dent take his fall, and gave Alfred a letter to convey to Bruce "when the time is right." He immediately left the penthouse.

After Batman and Gordon caught the Joker, Rachel and Dent were kidnapped by police officers on salary boss Sal Maroni (Eric Roberts), who worked under Joker orders. Batman interrogates the Joker and learns that the lives of Dent and Rachel are at stake. Joker tells Batman that he should choose which one to save and give him both locations. However, the Joker has diverted the address, with the intention of arranging the Dent's downfall. Batman speeds off, believing that he is traveling to Rachel's destination. Both Rachel and Dent were tied up in rooms surrounded by drums of gasoline and explosives controlled by remote control, with phones attached so they could talk to each other. Rachel tells Dent that she wants to marry him. Batman arrives at Dent's site in time to rescue him, but Gordon arrives at the other end, and Rachel is killed in the blast. The loss of Rachel, in addition to her own handicap, drove Dent crazy and she became the referee of the Two-Face killer, taking revenge on the people she considers responsible for Rachel's death.

After his death, Alfred read Rachel's note (which he deliberately left without cover) where he revealed that he intended to marry Dent. He explains that while Gotham may no longer need Batman, he now feels that the day when Bruce is no longer will never come. He urges Bruce not to give up on others, even if he has let him down. When Bruce got in touch with Alfred that his only consolation was the knowledge that he was going to wait for him, Alfred decided to burn the note, putting aside his pain on Bruce.

The Dark Knight Rises

Rachel does not appear on The Dark Knight Rises, but is mentioned several times. In addition, a picture of herself appeared in Wayne Manor, in the likeness of Gyllenhaal. Bruce, having handed over Batman's mantle, portrayed as still mourning Rachel eight years after her death, rarely leaves Wayne Manor and fails to move on and finds the normal life Rachel had promised her. When Bane (Tom Hardy) attacks Gotham City, Bruce decides to become Batman once again to fight him. In an attempt to stop him, Alfred finally confesses to Bruce that Rachel chose Dent and that he burned the letter to make Bruce in pain. This revelation puts a heavy strain on Bruce's relationship with Alfred, who then leaves Wayne Manor when Bruce decides to continue as Batman. Throughout the movie, Bruce keeps a photo of Rachel. At the end of the film, however, he has a relationship with Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), and has left his legacy to Detective John Blake (Joseph Gordon Levitt) so that he can finally get on with his life; Rachel proves wrong about his belief that he never gave up being Batman.

Development

Katie Holmes will be performing again as Rachel on The Dark Knight; he rejected it and starred in Mad Money instead. Before Maggie Gyllenhaal plays, Emily Blunt, Isla Fisher, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Rachel McAdams are considered replacing Holmes as Rachel. Gyllenhaal has admitted that Rachel is a girl in distress, but says Nolan is looking for ways to strengthen her character, so "Rachel is very clear about what's important to her and does not want to compromise her morale, which makes a nice change" of the many conflicting characters she has described previous.
