She Dropped was a 1992 novel by Wally Lamb who was widely read after being chosen as Oprah Book Club election in December 1996. Plot summary
Dolores Price was sad when her handsome and irresponsible father left their suburban home for another woman. She and her mother moved to her faithful Catholic grandmother's home in Easterly, Rhode Island, where she found herself an outsider in the adolescent social hierarchy at her Catholic school. After being raped by a dazzling neighbor, Jack Speight, he switched to food and television for comfort. At the age of 17, he has eaten with a clinical obesity and more than 250 kilograms.
After the accidental death of his mother, he decided to go to college in Pennsylvania. There he was mocked for his weight and fostered a secret obsession with his long-distance roommate friend Dante, who sent love letters and nude photographs in the post. After standing overnight with her slack janitor at the university, she took a long taxi to Cape Cod, where she watched a dying whale. He felt a kinship with an animal and crossed into the water to drown himself.
After a suicide attempt, he was instituted for several years and began working through his problem with the help of his therapist. He lost more than 100 pounds, but became frustrated with slow-moving therapy. He decides to move to Vermont, where he has placed Dante, the object of his college obsession.
Dolores got a job at a local grocery store and moved into the apartment just across the hall from Dante. She works as an English teacher in high school but is frustrated with the stagnation in her life after handing over her young ideals to becoming a priest. They start a relationship, and finally get married. However, Dante continues to dominate Dolores and has business with his female students. When Dolores became pregnant (something she really wanted), Dante forced her to have an abortion. After losing her baby, she becomes annoyed at the control she has over her life. After his grandmother died, he finally confessed to Dante that he arranged their entire relationship after becoming infatuated with him through his photographs. They divorced and he then left and moved to the house of his late grandmother, whom he inherited.
At her grandmother's funeral, Dolores can reconnect with some friends from her past, who formed a substitute family for her on Easter day. They encouraged him to pursue his dream, and he enrolled in several lectures while working. Here he meets Thayer, a single father, who soon falls in love with him despite his troubled past. At first he refused his offer, but was fascinated when he sent his teenage son to read the rap about how much he liked it. They started a temporary romance, based on Dolores's desire to have children. Dolores realized that for the first time, she had a man in her trustworthy life who would treat her as an equal. Thayer supported him when they received IVF treatment, but they did not have enough money for the second attempt after the first failed.
Dolores was distressed by the idea that she would never be a mother (now she is in her 30s) and Thayer, now her husband, took her on a whale watching holiday to help her feel better. While aboard, Dolores ponders her past and her future. She decided that her life was now beautiful and was enough. The novel ends with being the only person who sees a whale breaking an ocean symbolizing his new peace.
