Avenel is a community and census-defined place (CDP) located within Woodbridge Township, in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. In the 2010 US Census, the CDP population was 17,011.
The East Jersey State Prison is located on Avenel, near the Rahway border; Although located in Woodbridge Township, the prison postal address has caused it to be called "Rahway State Prison". Also located at Avenel is the Center for Diagnostic and Adult Care, which provides care for sexual offenders.

Histori
This community was founded in 1901; named for the daughter of Captain Demarest, the founder of the village, formerly known as Demarest on the Hill. In addition to Demarests, the first settlers included Brown family members, Clark, Cooper, Crowell, Douglass, Edgar, and Thorpe.

The Avenel # 1 Fire Company celebrates its 100th anniversary on June 8, 2013, with parades and picnics. The area also has three public schools, Avenel Middle School, Avenel Street School # 4 & amp; 5 and Woodbine Avenue School # 23.
Avenel is home to the Woodbridge Developmental Center, a residential care facility for people with developmental disabilities.
The places of worship at Avenel include the First Presbyterian Church, St. Roman Catholic Church Andrew, Central Baptist Church and Bible Fellowship Church.
Parks at Avenel include Mayor Frank Pelzman Memorial Park on Avenel, formerly Avenel Park, Eric LeGrand "Believe" Park, formerly Fifth District Park, and Prospect Avenue Park.
The sports teams at Avenel include the Avenel Warriors currently playing in their home field: Gatorade Park, soon to become the Montesinos Complex in Iselin (Home for Panther Iselin) while as they build a new field for them to play.

According to the US Census Bureau, Avenel has a total area of ââ3,532 square miles (9,148 km 2 ), including 3517 square miles (9.109 km 2 ) and 0.015 square miles (0.039 km 2 ) water (0.42%).

Census 2010
In the 2010 US Census, there were 17,011 people, 5,150 households, and 3,749 families living in the CDP. Population density was 4,836.8 per square mile (1,867,5/km 2 ). There are 5,379 housing units with an average density of 1,529.4 per square mile (590.5/km 2 ). The racial make-up of CDP is 47.89% (8,146) White, 19.78% (3.364) Black or African American, 0.52% (88) Native American, 22.89% (3.893) Asian, 0.07% (12) Pacific Islands, 5.53% (940) of other races, and 3.34% (568) of two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race is 15.84% (2,694) of the population.
There are 5,150 households in which 36.0% have children under 18 living with them, 54.0% are married couples living together, 13.5% have unmarried female households present, and 27.2% is not family. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone 65 or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.23.
In CDP, the population is spread by 19.5% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 35.3% from 25 to 44, 28.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% years or more. The median age was 37.5 years. For every 100 women there are 127.5 men. For every 100 women age 18 and older there are 135.8 men.

In the 2000 US Census there were 17,552 people, 5,233 households, and 3,799 families living in CDP. Population density was 1.970.0/km 2 (5.099.2/mi 2 ). There are 5,353 housing units with an average density of 600.8/km 2 (1.555.2/mi 2 ). Racial makeup from CDP is 53.52% White, 19.66% African American, 0.35% Native Americans, 18.90% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islands, 3.65% of other races, and 3, 89% of two or more races. Hispanic or Latin of any race is 9.85% of the population.
There are 5,233 households from which 36.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% are married couples living together, 11.9% have unmarried female households present, and 27.4 % is not family. 21.6% of all households consist of individuals and 7.5% have someone living alone 65 or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.23.
In CDP the population is spread by 20.8% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 42.8% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% or older. The mean age is 36 years. For every 100 women, there are 134.3 men. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 145.2 men.
The average income for households in the CDP is $ 54,929, and the average income for families is $ 61,029. Men have an average income of $ 48,000 compared to $ 31,804 for women. The per capita income for CDP is $ 19,794. About 6.1% of families and 9.6% of the population are below the poverty line, including 8.1% of those under the age of 18 and 6.6% of those aged 65 and older.
As part of the 2000 Census, 13.65% of the Avenel population identify themselves as Indian Americans. This is the fifth highest Indian population percentage anywhere in the United States with 1,000 or more residents identifying their ancestors.
Economy
Avenel is a key location of Bradco Supply, established in 1966, one of the country's leading building products distributors. The company has grown to more than 130 locations in over 30 countries.
Amazon.com operates a fulfillment center in Avenel. The facility, which opened in June 2013 includes 565,400 square feet (52,530 m 2 ).
Transportation
Avenel Station provides limited services on the New Jersey Transit North Jersey Coast Line.
