Coastal Bluff (foaled April 19, 1992) is a Thoroughbred British horse race. First trained by David Barron in Yorkshire he finished second at the start just as a teenager before winning two small races in the following year. In 1996 he emerged as a very successful fast runner with victories in the Stewards' Cup and Ayr Gold Cup before his season ended in injury. He returned as a five-year-old boy to die hot for Nunthorpe Stakes despite his brokenness after the initial break. He developed various training problems, failed to win in two races in 1998 and sold at the end of the year. He remained in training for four more years but only won two small races from 37 further starts before retiring in 2002.

Coastal Bluff is a magnificent gray horse raised in England by R M West. He is probably the best horse hired by Standaan, a gray runner who won the Stewards Cup in 1979 and Palace House Stakes in 1981. The Bluff Conbattente Coastal Dam shows little skill as a race horse, but his grandmother Tina is a successful broodmare. whose descendants include Rose Dubarry, a leading teenage filly of 1971 in England and Commanche Court.
In November 1992, the foal was ridden by the West to the sale of Tattersalls where he drew a bit of interest and purchased for 1,150 guinees by J Halford. Sales do not seem to be settled because foals return to Western ownership. At Doncaster, the following March, he was again set up for auction and sold for 2,700 guineas to coach David Barron. Coastal Bluff was brought to training by Barron in Maunby, North Yorkshire and a three-quarters stake was sold to David Sharp who ran a horse in possession of his wife. Barron stable is known as a "gambling page" which often gets a big win in the betting market: the coach admits "If I can help the owner's expenses, I will.I am not a person who provides information easily, and I believe that if there is money to make, who pays the bills should get the first chance to make it. "In the early days of his career Coastal Bluff was always driven by Kevin Darley or Jimmy Fortune.

Racing career
1994 & amp; 1995: early career
Coastal Bluff made his horse race debut in his first five furlong race at Redcar Racecourse on July 6, 1994. He started the 16/1 outsider but finished well to take a second, three-quarters of a length behind winner Tomal. He did not race again that year.
Coastal Bluff made his first appearance for nearly nine months when he finished being placed in a girl in Warwick on April 1, 1995, and then recorded his first victory sixteen days later when he took a similar event at Nottingham Racecourse with three and a half lengths. For the rest of the season he was campaigned in a disability race and ran five more times. He finished fifth in Thirsk Racecourse in May, fourth in Newmarket in early June and second favorite for a more valuable event in York two weeks later. After a two-month break, he returned to finish third under 138 pounds at Newcastle Racecourse before ending his season at Ascot in October. Driven by Darley, he was held in the early stages before taking the lead in the final round to win with the neck of a trained Fire Dome Richard Hannon.
1996: four-year season
On his first appearance as Bluff, the four-year-old Coastal Bluff brought in £ 118 at Wokingham Stakes for six furlong at Royal Ascot in June. Driven as in all its beginnings that year by Fortune, he completed thirteen of the twenty-nine runners behind the Emerging Markets after emerging somewhat beyond the closing stages. In a minor flaw in York on July 12, the hunt was done £ 130 and was won by the head of Tedburrow after leading in the final round. Barron then claimed that he wanted a badger to be subjected to severe punishment so that Fortune could ride him in the next race. On August 3, Coastal Bluff was one of thirty handicappers for the Stewards' Cup contest for six furlongs at Goodwood Racecourse. Bringing £ 117, he made 10/1 favorites along with Bounce Double six years. He was among the leaders from the start, went to the front two furlong out, and pulled away to win with three lengths from Double Bounce. After the Jimmy Fortune race commented, "I kept my head down and went to the line, only when I saw the video, I realized how far we were ahead" while the Sunday Mirror correspondent commented that the " 30-runners become cakewalk one horse ". Barron is more modest, saying "he won pretty well".
The Ayr Gold Cup on Sept. 21 saw Coastal Bluff kick off a 3/1 favorite against twenty-seven opponents despite being weighed over 136 pounds. Before the race he had produced a remarkable performance in a fast-running practice, but Barron had kept the proceedings in private until a major bet had been placed. His closest rival in the bet is Spendour Ganda six years and Prince Babar who is five years old. Brilliant always close to the lead before going forward on the two side sides standing outside. He remained in the closing stages to win a half-length from Mr Bergerac who trained Welsh, with Prince Babar and Double Splendor in third and fourth positions. The owner David Sharp claims "We know Coatal Bluff is something special at the age of two.He left ten long at Redcar, ran to the fence and still just beaten on the front line". The wanders suffered serious nail injuries on his return to his cage and were unable to race again that year. Barron claims that he's "never again the same horse".
1997: five-year season
In 1997 Coatal Bluff was transferred from a handicap to compete in weight races for ages and ridden in all five races by Darley. On his maiden debut he made his first appearance for over nine months when he competed the One July Cup Group at Newmarket on 10 July. He leads half way before tiring in the closing stages and ends up in fifth behind Compton Place, Royal Applause, Rocket Indians, and Bahamian Bahamy. Two weeks later on the same field, he started with his favorite chance of a five-furlong little wagering race and won "clever" with the neck of the Flying Childers winner, Easycall with Brave Edge (Achilles Stakes) in third. On 2 August he tried to repeat his success at the 1996 Steward Cup but ended behind Danetime under a weight of 136 pounds.
On August 21st in York Coastal Bluff was one of fifteen runners to compete with Nunthorpe Stakes and start a favorite 6/1 seconds behind Compton Place. Other runners include Mind Games (Stakes Temple), Almaty (Molecomb Stakes), Averti (King George Stakes), Ya Malak, Do not Worry Me (King's Stand Stakes), Easycall, Struggler (Prix de Saint Georges), Eveningperformance (Flying Five, Hever Golf Rose and Croft Pool (Stakes Temple) Coastal Bluff was struck out of the stalls when Struggler veered sharply to the left.The bridle soon broke out afterwards and Darley was left without an effective steering mechanism, forced at one point to rely on the horse's mane Despite his loss, Coastal Bluff was among the leaders throughout, tracking Eveningperformance and Mind Games before leading into the final round. In the closing stages he was pressed by Ya Malak and two horses crossed the line together, right in front of Averti's quick finish with 50/1 outsiders Cyrano Lad taking fourth. After checking the finished photo the judge racing arena declared dead heat between Bluff Coast and Ya Malak. traveling on the Bluff Coast, Darley said, "The horse jumped very well but I'm afraid that he's a little interested from the start. When I hold it to bring it back, something just goes away. I heard something in ping. The horse came on both sides and it helped me with the steering wheel and while he was there with the chance I would not give up on him. Thank goodness he has long hair so I use the best I can to keep my balance. At the beginning of 1997, Coastal Bluff embarked on a 9/2 third favorite behind Royal Applause for the Haydock Park Sprint Cup for six furlongs on 5 September. After chasing the leaders, he weakened badly to finish eight of the nine runners. When asked by the board to explain the poor folly, Barron reported that Coastal Bluff "blew in excess" after the race.
1998 - 2002: next career
Bluff's coast had no impact in 1998 when he only made two appearances ending in second place at Palace House Stakes and King's Stand Stakes. The horse has developed respiratory problems and also suffered from a serious tendon injury. Barron wanted to resign, but Sharp insisted that the horse be auctioned. In October he was sent to the sale of Tattersalls and bought 17,000 guineas by Linda Tate Bloodstock.
For the 1999 season, she moved to Nick Littmoden's cage in Newmarket. Although it was reported that he had recovered from injury problems, Coast Bluff failed to show his precious form as a seven-year-old boy, and finished no better than six in the starting nine. He did a little better in 2000 when he ran thirteen times and won a minor flaw in Nottingham in June as well as finishing second twice. After being substituted for his first appearance in 2001 he produced one of the best appearances of his career in the future as he won the Be Friendly Handicap at Haydock Park in May with a 33/1 odds. He finished in the next four rounds of that year. He remained in training as a ten-year-old but failed to win in nine races. He finished third in the minor handicap at Warwick and Newmarket and ended his career by completing the last eight runners in a similar event at Great Yarmouth Racecourse on August 25, 2002.
Commenting on his future horse career, Barron said in 2004 "It was a thorn on my side for a bit after he left, and I do not like to see him run, but time is a great healer, and now he is with Paul Dixon and at least he has a home the good one "
