Histori
According to "I Believe Story" from the compilation album Blessid Union of Souls Almost Acoustic (Volume 1) , the song was written by vocalist Eliot Sloan in the morning when he imagined the main piano sample to be used in the song and then play it.
I always tell people, and that is the truth, 'I Believe' was written in the middle of the night around three in the morning. I always live in downtown Cincinnati, a very cold spiral staircase up to my bedroom, which eventually became my studio. I keep the piano there that my mother got when I was nine years old. In the middle of the night I heard the melody and I thought, 'This is beautiful.' I just have to get up and play it.
Eliot Sloan stated in an interview with The Celebrity Cafe that he wrote a song about his relationship with "Lisa", a girl he once dated. Lisa's father is allegedly threatening to cut his tuition if he continues to see Eliot. They said goodbye and parted. He says that he still misses her very much, and puts a message on the liner notes from Home : "Lisa, give me a call sometime just to say hello, my number is still the same."

Meaning
This song is about the lack of love in the world. In an interview with thecelebritycafe.com, Eliot Sloan says "when I sing 'Love will find a way,' I mean 'God will find a way,'" and that he always believes that "God is love." While the songs use subtle Christian themes, as do many bands, they try to keep them from preaching too much.
Well, it's like... when we do the song, we're like... there's so much going on in the community. We just want to do something positive. We just want to touch a lot of points that the public seems to have a bit of a problem with as a whole. Racism is one of the things that we want to filter in the song. So we like, want to mention something about relationships that I can relate to people. It's really cool because a lot of people really relate to it. Many people have been in a relationship where their parents or friends do not want them to see this other person for whatever reason, whether it is race, religion or background, or whatever. We just really believe that love is the answer to these things. Without it try to sound hokey or anything just honest for a good answer. I am a witness to that. I associate with anyone who is open minded, and who has an open heart to many things. It's the same with everyone in this band. We all have different backgrounds and we all agree on the same thing. This is just one of them. There's no need for a lot of tension out there. Absolutely nothing. We feel very unnecessary in many situations. We just want to put hope in people and hope people will listen to the lyrics and get them out of the song. "

Critical reception
In a review from Allmusic's Home , staff writer Tom Demalon said that the song "reveals the band to have more of a social conscience than a similar act like Hootie & the Blowfish through tinged spiritual lyrics." Rolling Stone , staff writer Paul Evans called the song â ⬠Å"all true, wide-eyed affirmationsâ â¬.
